Freezer Storage techniques to keep your wild game fresh

Nothing is better than taking a deer, elk or any kind of animal that fills your freezer.  While it is great to kill that animal, you will want to do something with all of that meat because it is unlikely that you will be able to eat the whole thing before it goes bad.  Below I have a number of storage techniques that will prevent freezer burn and have your animal tasting as fresh as the day you killed it.

Vacuum Sealer

The best thing that you can invest in is a vacuum sealer.  There is just no better way to package your meat. It will give you the most secured packaging that will help to prevent any freezer burn and it can last well past a year when vacuum sealed.

You will want to use good bags, make sure that they will hold a good seal.  Also, make sure that they are made of heavyweight material. This will help keep your food lasting longer and will provide you with the best results.

Freezer Paper

Maybe you don’t have a vacuum sealer and want another way to wrap your meat up and prevent freezer burn.  Freezer paper is one of the best things that you can invest in. It is relatively cheap and easy to mark and identify which meat is which.

You want to buy premium butcher paper, as with anything you get what you pay for, and you want to spend the extra money to preserve your meat.  You will want to wrap the meat tightly, and by overlapping the edges, while trying to remove as many air pockets as possible. You should always remember to write what kind of meat it is and the date you packed it.

Ziploc Bags

Maybe you don’t have a vacuum sealer or freezer paper, and the only thing you have are some Ziploc bags.  While this is the least effective method, you will want to make sure that you double wrap it as freezer burn occurs from the air that is stuck in the wrapper.

Try to remove the most amount of air from both bags.  Then you will want to mark the Ziploc bag for when you bagged it.  It will not last as long as the above methods, but if you do it right, it can last a little while.

Stacking

When you start to package the meat you want to make sure that it is as flat as possible.  This will allow the meat to freeze quickly, which will prevent more crystals from forming on the inside of the meat packaging.  If you allow the crystals to form, it will cause the meat to spoil over time causing the meat to develop a funny taste.

Conclusion

Investing in the right material is one of the best things that you can do to take care of your wild game.  The best thing that you can buy is a vacuum sealer or butcher paper. This allows you to prevent freezer burn and will protect your meat for the longest amount of time.

Using Ziploc bags is the least effective method, but if doing it correctly, you can preserve your meat for a while.  Also, it is important for how you freeze your meat. Make sure that they are frozen as flat as possible and stacked on top of one another, to allow for the best freezing.  Following these tips will make sure that you get the most out of your kill.
